Munich Malt Spec for Beer engine

Post by Manx Guy » Sat May 22, 2010 9:35 pm

Hi

I have tried to formulate a recipe for an Oktoberfest beer that I got from a US website...

However I get some 'odd readings when entering the Specs I got from that site into Beer Engine...

Does anyone have the correct specs for Munich malt Please?

Danke!

I believe it depends where the Munich malt comes from...
There are several possible Maltsters in the UK and I think German Munich malt is actually different again.
I've always used the standard Munich that comes pre-programmed in Beer Engine.

Hi,

Thanks for the response!

The recipe I have shows the following grain bill:

Pils Malt 6lb (3.5kg)
Munich 4lb (1.8kg)
Aromatic malt (?) 0.5lb (225g)

They state an OG of 1.052-1.056
and is bittered to 20IBU using a noble hop combination

When I enter the above grain bil linto BE I get an OG of over 1.090!!!
WTF?
Am I making a schoolboy error here? if so its not obvious to me...

Any help greatly appreciated

Cheer!

:)

BE comes out at 1062 here using lager malt instead of Pils.
What is your efficiency set at? Mine is 75%

Hi!

Thanks for that... I think its at the default which is either 70 or 75%... I'm not on the PC that has BE downloaded so will have to check...

I'll have a play around and see what I can come up with...
Ideally I want to get the OG down a bit while keeping the same/similar ratios of grains...

What do you think would work in the way of 'aromatic' malts? do they mean carafa or choc malt or similar?

Thanks again for your help!
:)

Just put a tick in the 'Fixed' box by the OG in Beer Engine and type a new OG in, the malt percentages stay the same :)

Aromatic malt is basically a kind of Crystal malt.
Aromatic malt provides a very strong malt flavour and aroma. Although not a roasted malt, it is kilned at close to the maximum possible temperature of 115°C until the desired colour is obtained. Perfect for any beer in which a high malt profile is required and can be used in fairly high quantities as some diastatic power is retained.

Colour 150 - 160 EBC; Maximum percentage 20%
Says the Brupaks website ;)

Hmm...

Thanks I might use crystal instead then as none of my normal supliers seem to stock aromatic malt...

I will enter a new OG and mark it as fixed to alter the amounts of malts...
What concerned me was that whilst in the grain editor (adding caramunich) I might of accidently edited Munich malts specs...

Could I be a pain and ask you to list the specs you have in your BE pls?

Many thanks in advance.

I have just put the recipe into beerengine, using the standard lager malt, Munich malt and crytal malt and it works out at O.G. 1.054 at 23 litres 75%. Bang on I would say. There must be something wrong with your setup.

Many thanks Graham!

It must be as I suspected that I accidentily altered the specs for Munich... As I suspected it was operator error and not the recipe and certainly not the software !
What a fool I am...

Is there a way I can 'reset to default settings or should I get the correct settings and enter them in via the grain editor?

Many thanks!

There is not a restore to defaults thing. I expect that the Brupaks stuff is Weyermann malt.

Weyermann Munich type 1
Extract should be 296
Colour should be 10
Moisture 4.5
Fermentability 200 (sets it automatic)
Primary malt

Munich type 2 should be the same except that the colour is 18.5

Hello!

Many thnaks for that Graham, much appreciated!
I'll punch those specs in later and see what happens. At the moment I am on my work PC which does not allow me to download 'unathorised software' Beer engine is on my home PC (which runs Windows 7).

Can't you load a copy of BeerEngine onto a memory stick and run it from the stick? It will run from a stick if you click on beerengine.exe
