crushed wheat malt

Post by jimny14 » Wed Jun 02, 2010 8:19 am

Hi I've been given some crushed wheat malt with some other bits through freecycle n I wanrt to use it in a wheat beer I'm planning. Questions so far are does it need mashing or do I treat it like a speciality grain? Also I have 500 g so far n am planning to make the rest of the fermentables up with wheat dme. If I'm gonna be doing a mini mash anyway should I do a kilo of crushed wheat? Thanks guys.

Yes it needs mashing - along with barley else it could stick (wheat is huskless and proine to a stuck mash).

60% seems to be about upper limit for wheat in a grain bill unless you use rice hulls or oat husks to loosen up the mash.

Cheers for that. Notice you're in Lancster too. I'll probably stick this on this weekend all being well, should be an interesting saturday afternoon I think. Be interesting to see how it comes out. Thanks for the help.

HIya,

There's 2 others here all grain brewing. If you want any marris otter or more wheat malt drop me a PM - IU've got a sack of MO and happy to flog it at cost + probably some spare wheat malt too. One of our number goes past Leyland pretty often and we club in on joint orders to thrifty etc.

Always keen to meet another local brewer - informal co-op and sharing kit and swapping brews is the way forward IMHO :)
