Substituting different crystal malts

Post by Bobba » Tue Jun 15, 2010 1:05 pm

I'm planning on brewing some Lagunitus IPA and based on the Brewing Network Jamil show podcast interview, the grist some crystal malt...

400g 10L Crystal (5.65% total)
250g 60L Crystal (3.8% total)

I've got some 130EBC crystal I was planning on using. How does the substitution work....
- is the flavour quite similar for light, dark etc. so I just swap it weight for weight?
- Does the flavour go with colour and I swap it to get the same EBC contribution
- Or it's something different and I just chuck in around 500g and suck it and see !!

Thanks as always ;)

FV: -

Nope, they're different. 60L is near enough to 130EBC so that's fine. 10L Crystal would be caramalt in the UK crystal malts. I wouldn't try to replace it with more 130EBC. If you don't have it I'd leave it out entirely and just use more pale malt instead.

Oh right wow! I'm glad I asked, could have ended up with quite a crazy concoction!!! I was thinking 500g of crystal in an IPA couldn't be right
