Nnngh.
Just had an email about next season (Sept onwards) malt prices and I'm seeing some significant price increases over the 2009/10 season.
I was paying €0.48/Kg for 2-row pils and that's heading north to €0.553 for the same.
Mind you, checking my oldest prices and 2008/9 for that malt was €0.579 so it's still cheaper than a few years ago.
I'm only brewing tiddy quantities so the prices don't really matter a lot but I'd think if you were brewing on any kind of scale and it'll cascade through to dearer beer.
C'est la vie!

Re: Forward Malt prices
I'm not surprised. The wheat price has gone up a lot and barley follows it as a lot of barley is also used for animal feed. Brewing barley follows it as there's a premium for it over feed barley.
Re: Forward Malt prices
Mostly due to wildfires in Russia this summer I think, so blame the gulf stream.
Re: Forward Malt prices
I work in the commodity trade.
Fires in Russia.....they have lost about one fifth of the wheat crop and banned exports of all grains.
Weather problems in Canada is also leading to fears of more crop losses.
Wheat prices up 30% in 3 weeks.
This natuarally filters through in to other commodity prices as people look for alternatives to wheat.
All supply and demand related issues....fuelled by money funds speculating on prices as well
