Torriefied wheat - an aquired taste ?

Post by Manx Guy » Wed Sep 15, 2010 4:05 pm

Hi,

First AG i(Ringwood XXXX) clone from GW's BYOBRA book) n the FV and almost fermented... However I had a taste of the SG sample and it tastes 'wrong' very much like shredded wheat - the breakfast cereal :(
Otherwise the brew shows a lot of promise, nice malt flavour with a hint of coffee (from choc malt?) and nice hoppyness (about right for the style)

I've used it before in small quantites in ME brews, but never really noticed any taste from it...

The 16 litre batch I made used 275g of torri wheat and there is a definate wheat flavour....

I know the beer is young yet, so I'm, hoping this will soften... Otherwise I'll be forcing it down...

Do I just chalk this one down to experience and substitute (malted wheat maybe?) it out of any recipes in future?

Any suggestions or opinions would be gratefully received...

Cheers!

I use a lot less wheat for head retention - typically 100-150g for a 23L batch, so the taste isn't really noticeable. I also use regular old wheat malt rather than torrefied as I think it has a better taste. Give it a go....
