Lager malts
Lager malts
Was`wondering has anyone got experience of H&G U.K. lager malt? How does it compare with the more expensive brupaks pilsner malt. I've used the pilsner malt before but don't know if its worth the extra dosh.
I've used HopShop Lager malt and it's fine. The main difference I think is where it comes from - I think nearly all lager malts nowadays are well modified and can be used in a single infusion mash.
If you're after a sack of the continental Pilsner malt it's a probably cheaper to get it shipped from Belgium from Brouwland (EDIT: I've just noticed you're in Belfast...maybe it won't be)
Unless I had a really good reason to, I'd use the UK stuff as a base malt.

It's been a long time since I used the continental pilsner but they are known for traditionally having more DMS precursors (the cabbage smell) than other malts. I haven't noticed that with UK lager malts which I have used in the last couple of months. If you're after a real traditional pilsner beer with that little hint of DMS (in small amounts it's quite nice) then maybe stick with the pilsner - other than that I'd say the lager would be fine.
