Combine different malts to get crystal flavour

Post by soupdragon » Sat Jul 23, 2011 2:08 pm

Hi all

Just wondering if it's possible to use Caramalt and a small amount of either Black or Chocolate malt to get close to the flavour of Crystal? I know I could go out and buy some but I'm just curious

Cheers Tom

I've actually switched to using caramalt in place of crystal as I prefer the flavour.

My latest recipe was a simple one with 10% caramalt 90% pale malt hopped to 28IBU with fuggles with a nice dollop of fuggles at the end for aroma.

It's turned out to be a very, very nice toffee/biscuity brew with slight sweetness balanced well by the fuggles - the first thing you get is a mouthfull of toffee/biscuit followed by the fuggles aroma and slight bitterness.

Don't worry about the colour difference, just enjoy the beer :D
