Carapils and cooked corn aroma

I've just steeped 100g of Carapils for a small 5l extract batch. I haven't started the boil yet or added the extract but i've noticed a strong "cooked corn" aroma from the brewpot. I thought "cooked corn" flavours and aromas can develop during fermentation but I haven't heard of them being present after steeping grains. Is this normal?

Cooked corn aroma comes from DMS (Di-methyl Sulfide). This only ends up in your beer if you boil with a lid on, otherwise it boils off.

Great. So all normal then?

Anyone else got an opinion on this. On another point, is 100g carapils too much for a 5 litre batch. I'm using 1.1kg of malt - it's a 9% barleywine.

Thats less than 10% paddy, no bothers there.
Cant help you on the smell though

Thanks lads. Well, did the boil anyway. No cooked corn smell after the boil so hopefully all well there.

I ended up not doing the barleywine in the end Spud. I did 12 litres of IPA using the same amout of steeping grains.
