Malt Price Increase
Malt Price Increase
I had a letter off Fawcetts today notifying me of price rises from 1st January. There is a shortage of malt due to the dry spell in East Anglia resulting in tons of high nitrogen content barley being produced which is not fit for brewing. Subsequently prices will rise. Looks like about £3 a sack to me. No doubt at the retailers this will equate to £6 per sack

Re: Malt Price Increase
We had the 'Dry Spell' explained to us at work.
Rain normally washes away a lot of the fertilizer before the barley has time to take up the nitrogen from it, this results in barley and other crops having a higher Nitrogen content which in turn is bad for Haze in beer, its not that its bad for making beer with its just got a higher likelihood of creating a persistent haze.
It may see brewers adding a percentage of Flaked Maize or Flaked Rice to dilute the nitrogen content of the beer.
Unless this also has an effect on the size of the crop too, a £3 increase sounds like a good excuse to raise the price in any case!

I'll happily buy a sack for more money from a different supplier to 'evaluate' what I'm getting from work.

Re: Malt Price Increase
My father in law was passing through Warminster a few months ago, i got him to stop off at the brewery and collect me a sack of malt.
How much for 25kgs MO direct from the malters?? £42 + VAT!!!!!
I nearly fell over when he told me, I didn't have the heart to tell him an identical sack costs me £25 from the homebrewshop and is delivered free if i spend £60!

I only live a few miles from there and it is a bit gutting that they charge that price. But you have to be realistic, for homebrewers their route to market is through the LHBS or online sellers and they don't want to undermine that or have the hassle of having to deal with us dropping in just for a sack or two...
Re: Malt Price Increase
Seems a bit wasteful to me, why not put the right amount of fertilizer on so the barley takes up only what it needs... Rather that leaving fertilizer in the soil for the rain to wash in to rivers...?pdtnc wrote:We had the 'Dry Spell' explained to us at work.

Fawcett's are not a million miles from me and they will sell to homebrewers from the same price list as commercial brewers. Only rub is the minimum order is 10 sacks!
