Belgian dark Candi Syrup
Belgian dark Candi Syrup
Hi, does anyone know of a source for dark Candi syrup in the UK at all? I'd obviously like to get as close to the original as possible so an importer might be the best choice but a quick scan of here and the internet in general seems to point to direct import from Belgium being the only real choice at the moment.
Thanks

Never found it in the UK - best to stock up in the supermarkets in Belgium where it's 2 euros.
I've used palm sugar from oriental supermarkets to good effect. Not the same but using the most interesting ingredients to hand seems far more belgian in approach if not ingredients.

It might be worth dropping an email to rob at Maltmiller. A while ago he brought in a load of different Belgian syrups and he might be able to sort you out.

Take some friends - I was allowed to buy 6 bottles for me, 6 for my wife and 6 for my then-3-month-old daughter. Getting through on the beer phone is HARD to do but worth a punt to buy a crate.mkirkby wrote:Indeed & a trip to westvleteren is planned sometime this year. Inspiration I suppose !
THen lay them up a good long time - I've got 7 of the blue-cap westvleteren 8degrees in the cellar and they mature brilliantly
Re: Belgian dark Candi Syrup
I was lucky enough to visit the Abbey tasting room with some Belgian friends last October.
Great beer but they had none for sale outwith the stuff they were selling in the tasting room.
There were some extremely pi55ed Belgians in there!

I'm planning a dark Belgian using Candi sugar. I've made it myself in the past with great success and plan on making it again this time. Here's a helpful link.

Sorry! Try this: http://forum.northernbrewer.com/viewtop ... 9&t=104117
Whether or not it will turn out like genuine candi syrup, I don't know. Either way, it will impart deliciousness. Can't wait to make some of this stuff again. It takes time though. Don't rush it!
I'm planning on making 1.2Kg of the stuff so I could be at the hob for a while...

I got to test the dark. I brewed a Belgian Porter with it, half of which is still aging on Brett. Fantastic dark plum, rum-raisin notes. I'm really hoping Rob adds this to his regular line-up.jimp2003 wrote:It might be worth dropping an email to rob at Maltmiller. Dammit - I still have a kilo of this in the fridge, but haven't got to brewing with this yet. I'll be brewing a dubbel with WLP530 though - with any luck in the next few weeks...alikocho wrote:I got to test the dark. I brewed a Belgian Porter with it, half of which is still aging on Brett.
