Yes, probably. There is a contradiction in terms though. If it has been micronised, there is no need to real need to flake it, and the other way round

Grits, in my view, refer to micronised cereals, and not what the title of this section implies. Micronised cereals usually need to be cooked in a cereal cooker first (boiled for a while like rice) before adding to the mash tun. The fact that those appear to be flaked as well would save the cooking bit of it.

I am surprised that they are micronised and flaked. If they are flaked, there is no need for them to be micronised - there is no point. It might be confusion. They migh be flakes, but supplied by Micronised Food Procducts, a manufacturer of such things, or used to be

Ind Coope and Tetleys were fond of using micronised cereals in their grists.

UPDATE

Just had a look round the net and it seems that some micronised products don't need cooking anymore. The makers shove them under infra-red heaters to do much the same thing. Doesn't turn the into flakes though.

I'd go for it (if it's really necessary). If you start growing a long shaggy mane down your back I'd give them a miss next time round.

Hello Graham i presumed the barley was flaked but it may not be. I brought a little home for comparison with some at home it looks identical though. I priced it against hop & grape £31.25 or micronized £6.I already use the micronized flaked maize with good results. I use it in your lovely Belhaven recipe instead of maltose syrup. I just need to find a cheap source now for melanoidin malt sure adds a love malty nutty flavour.

That's hell of a difference in price. Oh, you must have a first edition. In the later edition I removed the maltose syrup and readjusted the malt and added a bit of cane suger, because the ruddy home brew shops wouldn't stock it, or the wholesalers wouldn't supply it.

I have even noticed in the pub you can pick out the maize flavour from Belhaven 80-/ I have noticed an increased maize flavour in the commercial version of late probably for profit. I think they are over doing the maize flavour now. Cheers

I was interested in these posts and I was thinking of using Micronized Flaked Barley from the horse place in my next stout. It seems that they have 'Cooked' flaked barley advertised rather than 'Micronized'.

Does anyone know if it is the same stuff? Is it any good to me?

Thanks,
Andrew
