My first beer ever - and confused...

Post by zehnernet » Sat Jul 28, 2007 10:31 am

Hi Board!

I want to start a brew. I visited moco a few weeks ago (he is on holidays now). We bought all things I need for a brew. I bought a tin of Coopers IPA and as well Muntons Medium Spraymalt. Moco gave me a todo-list, but I can't find something about the spraymalt.
Does anybody know (I'm sure) when I have to drop the spraymalt? Together with the Coopers tin?

BTW: Congrats to Jim for that forum and sorry about my bad english (only german school-english).

Thanks a lot in advance,
Stafen

Or is it just me

Thanks for your welcome, you make me turn pink!

Maybe "Father Ted" knows something about my little problem?

Stefan,

I've done the Coopers IPA kit and the spraymalt has to be added to hot/boiling water to get it to dissolve before you add it to the contents of the tin in the fermentor, then adding cold water to make up to volume.

I've not made too many of these kits but I'm sure someone will be along soon who can give you better advice

When you've emptied the tin use some hot water to dissolve whats left in the tin and add this to your fermentor.

Ps, I think this topic needs moving to the 'Kits' section mods as it may get overlooked here

Hi Stefan

Your English is much better than my German

I made Coopers IPA in June and it's the best kit beer I've done 8)

I made it with 1kg of malt too here's what I did

1) Sterilise everything that will touch the beer and rinse it
2) Warm up the can of malt
3) Disolve the kilo of dry malt in 2litres of hot water and boil it for 10 minutes to ensure it is sterile
4) Put the 2 litres of malty water (made in step 3) into the fermenter along with the contents of the can.
5) Rinse the can out with hot water to make sure you get all the malt out
6) Add water until the fermenter is half full and stir well (with sterilised paddle) to get lots of air into the liquid
7) Move the fermenter to its final location and fill up to 23l
8) Make sure the temperature of the beer is less than 25C and sprinkle the sachet of yeast on top of the beer and put the lid on the fermenter loosly and leave it for a week.

There is a guide with pictures here that one of the site admins wrote. It is a slightly different method to making up the Coopers IPA but as long as you make sure everything is clean before you start brewing either way will make good beer.

Keep us posted on your progress

Hi Folks!

It's done! I can't wait any longer. And here are the results of the German jury:

Image
Uwe, a friend of mine, heavely drinking. "Tastes like a good Potts!"

Image
Birgit, another friend, to her second glass in 4 minutes!

Two of my children - still prefer juice.

And the very yummy beer - comes here ;-):

And here comes the recipe:
Cooper's Real Ale
Yeast: Safale S-04
Light Spaymalt 1000g
Hand full of Goldings Hops, boild with a little bit of water for about 15 minutes, in the keg afterwards.

Thanks again to who helped me out with my questions, and a loud "Cheers!" to everyone!

Thanks @all!

My next challenges will be:
- Coopers Dark Ale with medium Malt
- Brewferm Famboos with light Malt
and
- Dogbolter

But I don't know wich first yet. I have only one keg, so I have to wait until it's done. - Not that there is much left anyway (halfe a keg the first evening...)

Nice one, Z-net!

I hope the missus thought it all worthwhile.

Why don't you get a brew on ready. I'm sure it won't take more than a couple of weeks to empty your keg (not at that rate, anyway).

Or start collecting bottles now...

Proper Bo! Glad to see that you enjoyed it! I found that cooling down the hot wort before you add it to the main batch of water gives a better result, put the pot of hot wort in the sink and fill water up around it, that should soon cool it down then add it to the water.
Fermenting -!
Maturing - Lenin's Revenge RIS
Drinking - !
Next brew - PA
Brew after next brew - IPA
