Malt to replace sugar?

Post by aamcle » Wed Apr 02, 2014 5:03 pm

I'm going to make up one of the kits I got cheap from Tesco.

I should be adding 1.5 kg sugar, but I have some pilsner malt I can mash.

If I get 70% efficiency how much grain would I need to use to replace the sugar.

Thanks. Aamcle

Let's see.

Granulated sugar gives about 370 points kg/l, and base malt about 300, and with 70% efficiency, 210.

So you need to mash 1.5 x 370/210 kg of malt to get the equivalent of 1.5kg of sugar.

I make that about 2.7 kg of malt needed.

Thanks Jim; the mini mash is on, 1.5kg pilsner malt in 5 litres of water and I hit the strike temp spot on!

I'll be adding about 750g sugar and a little Sazz near the end of the boil.
