Extra pale malt vs marris otter?
Extra pale malt vs marris otter?
Is there a difference? Or is it just different terminology for the same thing? Can't seem to see extra pale malt anywhere to buy
Re: Extra pale malt vs marris otter?

Re: Extra pale malt vs marris otter?
Depends upon your perspective. They're all close, compared to something like mild or brown malt, but they have key subtle differences, and will vary slightly by year and maltster.
Here's my take on them, happy to be shot down in flames by those that know better.
Maris Otter - has a slight biscuit/breadiness to it, and will be the darkest of these base malts - but only just. It'll provide a blond to golden colour.
Great for British ales, or something else needing a malty base.
Pearl and Halcyon are similar, but not identical, as they are also winter grown barley. Optic and Golden Promise are also similar, but are spring barleys. The differences are subtle, but they are there - GP is supposedly a tiny bit sweeter, and Optic the lightest.
Pale Ale Malt - has less of a flavour, but roughly the same colour as MO. Good where you want a cleaner base for your big hopped American Pales.
Extra Pale/Lager Malt - very clean flavoured - malt but little breadiness. Ideal for lagers or other beers where you need a very clean base malt. Will produce an ale that is pale straw to blond.

Cheers for that mate, that's exactly what I was after. Think I'll stick with MO. Good to know what everything is though

Depending on what you're brewing it might not make any difference: pick out the base malt in a 10% imperial stout.gibbiem wrote:Is there a difference? Or is it just different terminology for the same thing? Can't seem to see extra pale malt anywhere to buy
I'm just here for the beer.
