pale malt confusion?

Post by beer gut » Mon Apr 13, 2015 4:25 pm

Hi all I am going to buy a sack of pale malt but every year it gets more confusing with the different maltings and different malts.I love Maris otter from Crisp and Thomas Fawcett but now you get Halycon, Triple and now you have Crisp Clear choice ale malt. Is there any difference in taste, extract potential and how the wort clears? What is Warminsters malt like it is quite expensive but you can't put a price on quality.

The short answer is stick with what you know and love.
The long answer is make a bunch of batches (SMaSH?) with the same recipe, each with one of the malts and compare for yourself.
You can put a price on quality. All of the above malts are good quality. Is Warminsters enough better than the others to make the higher price worth it? It might be to me, but not to you.
I'm just here for the beer.

Hi Rookie thanx for the wise words :D I think I might just do that In the past I used optic great efficiency but a little on the bland side so I went back to Maris otter and i have never change since. I am all for sticking what you know that works I just don't want to miss anything because if we don't experiment we don't learn and evolve. I might try a sack of Warminsters Maris otter I have read it has a deeper malt taste than crisp or Fawcett which will suit this year's recipes a lot of bitters and a Esb I have been waiting to brew for some time plus my winter beers.
