bulk DME?

Post by Walrus81 » Mon Oct 01, 2007 1:51 pm

I found a website that would sell drums of DME i.e in greater quantites than 1.5G, anyone know if you can get bigger quantities of DME?

Just looking to get a tub to use over 5 brews or so over a month hence a tub.

Thanks

Most decent homebrew shops do 15kg jerry cans of it.

Try your local friendly micro brewer who can get it in 25 kg sacks from the wholesale trade.

excellent info. Ex bosses brother owns a brewery(I think), so may go and have a chat. Also maybe go to local breweries.

I've looked for Spraymalt in bulk, but I've never found any that works out cheaper than Munton's from BrewGenie at £2.25/500g - the 25kg packs from brew-it-all work out at £2.80/500g.

Just one thing I would mention, brew-it-all sell 25Kg buckets of DME on their site which is liquid Diastatic Malt Extract, not Dried Malt Extract (Spraymalt), just to save any confusion.

brouwland sell 25 kg of dry spraymalt for about £93 including delivery .

Search ; brewing/maltextracts/spraymalt

Edit ; I've just checked the actual conversion rate it would be about £97 including delivery.

You know how you open a bag of cement and them come back a year later to find it a solid block. Wouldn't 25kg of spray malt be a bit like that?

having had a look at this, the link above now is 150E for 25KG delivered - strong euro at the moment

I have found this for 15KG bags at £60

not sure about this as there is no description other than EDME - is this the same as DME? if so at £75 delivered for 25Kg its a great deal.

can anyone tell me if this is the right stuff?

found Edme's data sheet here would need to find out which product this is but it could be a good find

The Munton's is liquid and comes in 15KG jerry cans, IIRC they are £48 at Brewmart.

The Edme DME is likely to be Diastatic Malt Extract which is used for extract recipes, not really any use for kit brewing as it needs to go through a boil. In any case, if its made by Diamalt at Newark, you may have difficulty obtaining it as I believe they have now ceased production.

Bulk liquid malt extracts are the most economical, but the cheaper ones such as John Bull, Diamalt, and Paines will be disappearing from the shelves as they all come from Diamalt.

Yes, I remember the discussion about that now. The EDME datasheet link above going to Diamalt threw me a bit...

I'm also interested in some bulk liquid extract, to finish off the kits I have, and as a bit of a play with extract brewing before going the whole hog with a permanent AG setup.
