Anyone else mix grains?
Sometimes when brewing a SMASH I'll use the same malt, like maris otter, from different maltting companies to get a bit of complexity while still maintaining the "single malt" aspect.
I'm just here for the beer.

What’s the point though? The single malt is an exercise to see what kind of beer you can pull out of the restriction. It’s a challenge to the brewers skill, and a rediscovery of what your main malt does to a beer.
It doesn’t elevate its status/value in the way that it does for whisky (where it means something different). Blending malts in this way will make your beer ineligible for SMaSH competitions too.

The Norwich home brew club did an experiment brewing the same beer with different Maris Otter malts, they came out quite different, so you may be onto something.
But yes it’s no longer a SMASH if that bothers you.

I think technically it would still be a SMASH as it's all maris otter, just malted differently by the various maltsters.

It’s the same variety, not the same malt so not a SMASH.
But if so what you want! It’s only beer.
