Simpson's Malts.

Post by PeeBee » Tue Mar 14, 2023 4:21 pm

First there was "Amber Malt" Don't know what they did to it, but for making a Fuller's "1845" clone the stuff is irreplaceable with anyone else's "Amber Malt". 62 EBC. It isn't diastatic (as should be expected).

Then we have their "Imperial Malt". 45 EBC yet still diastatic. Interesting! There're hints of whatever they do with the Amber, but not so obvious; blink and it goes straight over your head.

Now, (in the last few days) Malt Miller have Simpson's "Cornish Gold" malt on their lists at 25 EBC (it's used in "Proper Job" [nope - wrong!*] apparently; once exclusively?). Finally, we can buy it. Must try it? I think? Costs a bit though.

Cornish Gold - 25KG - Malt Miller

*[EDIT: Not "Proper Job" ... "Tribute". I've just been spending some time with the fairies, an' they'll have me typing all sorts of nonsense.]

Yeah, I know it’s crazy times but you can still get a bag of pale sub 40.

I just picked up a sack of Bairds for 25 off the local micro at cost price last week. Not tried it but they turn out some decent ales.

No. I am with you Lee - my last MO was 18 (Couple of months ago) so I expect the next to be just over £20.

I will be interested to see what you have to pay next @Mashbag...I was told in December that Crisp's prices were going up by c.40% in Jan this year.

If you see similar, your £18 sack will now be about £25.

Malt Miller's prices have certainly risen quite a bit.

e.g. Simpsons GP was £1.97/Kg a year ago (I bought a little for a beer I made), but is now £2.59/Kg (31% increase).

About 2 years ago they had Crisp's wheat malt at £1.60 and it is now £2.63 (a 64% increase over 2 years!).

I have bought malts from other HB Co.'s over the past few years, but I'm not able to see my order history with them, so cannot see the extent to which this is an industry wide price increase.

Is that the new price you've been quoted? That is a 38% price rise :(

I wonder if these price increases might be a seed for the revival for sugar?

I doubt it.

This says price was 106p/Kg in Jan 2023, rising from 74p in Jan 2022 (43% increase) and from 72p in Jan 2021 (47%).

It would certainly eek out the grain on a bigger % brew.

All my stronger brews contain sugar in one form or another. The finished beer is not as sweet and conditions more quickly.
