Toasting malt for an Irish Red

Post by BarryNL » Wed Jan 02, 2008 12:33 am

I'm thinking of an Irish Red next and I'd like a good strong toasted malt flavour in it - has anyone had good/bad results toasting their own grain and what are your recommendations (or things to avoid doing)?

As far as I am aware no one toasted malt for Irish red ale. They are generally simple ales with pale, crystal malt (5% roughly) and around 80grams of roasted barley that give the color and a little flavor. You also can substitute in chocolate malt, but roasted barely is more traditional.
