snails

Post by jean-yves » Tue Apr 18, 2006 10:55 pm

the weather is warmer and still wet, that's good for the hops but also for the snails and slugs which are eating all the new little leaves

you can use chemical to kill them, one of the best (not too expensive and works very well) is "metaldehyde" sold under different names at 70 gr/100m2.
another one very good too but more expensive is the 'methiocard" at 50gr/m2.

it's very important to look at that now as you can lost all your hops

A beaker of beer drilled into the ground makes for a safe and organic slug and snail trap... :D ;) :out You can protect it from the rain with a plastic party plate with holes cut in it to allow access and stake it to the ground with a cloche pin. :)

The best treatment for the soil around the base of slug and snail sensitive plants is broken sea shells which, even more than gravel, make for an unattractive surface to slime one's little slug body over. :beer

yes andy ,some eat them and say that's very good, I'll never try it :out

the plastic plates with holes is good against the weeds (where the snails and slugs are)

daab, i think that's a good idea for your pergola, hop entwines themselves like tomatoes

Any ideas what on earth he's doing with this brew ?

Seems to mash then run off everything including the grain then install a filter in the mash tun, add back all the spent grain and runoff and then filter it all

tribs

I ordered some prima donna (similar to first gold) hop plants from beer essentials like others on this forum. I planted one and gave the other to my dad.

I've discovered I have a big slug problem in my garden and the pesky pests have been chewing on my hop plant. Last night I installed a copper ring made out of left over copper tubing as DaaB suggested. I just bent it a few times so the ends met.

I checked it later and found a fat slug almost the size of the plant chomping on it so I pulled it off and disposed of it. I found a gap so the slug could slide under the copper. I filled the gap and this morning they appear ok. I'll get some slug pellets from B&Q at the weekend as I see some of my other plants are suffering from attack.

I've had exactly the same problem - my garden hedge seems to be infested with snails, and I have to check all my plants a couple times a day to get rid of the critters. I put down egg shells in my hop plants but this did little. (I've also discovered chives seem to be a snail's favourite snack <_< )

A bigger problem re hops has been greenfly, so I sprayed them with bugspray. Wanted to avoid using chemicals, but they were munching too much of the leaves. The spray says it is ok for tomato plants so this should be ok.

I've just conducted a more thorough check and it didn't work :(

Soon, there'll be no leaves left  . Going to B&Q at lunch to get some stuff.

QUOTE (Daft as a Brush @ Jun 9 2006, 11:41 AM) B_D...try Provao Ultimate Bug killer from green/black fly, its about the only effective one left and its safe on food plants.
That's what I used and it seems to have worked :) ... for now ..

I second Reg's beer suggestion. My hops have escaped so far, but a small tray of beer next to me peas seems to have attracted a fair share of slugs.
