I'd have thought it best to restrict them to 4-6 bines even in the first year- it's just you are unlikely to see more than this anyway due to them focussing on the root system

the fuggle is going well and is approaching 2 foot now on its longest bine, there are a couple of other bines emerging, but not really going anywhere

Prima Donna is a bit more balanced between 3 bines but not as vigorous

an here's hoping that Early Bird is really focussing on establishing that root system as there's bugger all going on above ground

ImageI bought an 'established' hop plant at my local nursery, £6.99. It says 'Nordbrau' which may be some Northern Brewer I think. Anyway, it's in the ground and will be trained up no around a shed which faces the afternoon and evening sun!

I have two plants with five lobed leaves. One is slightly five lobed with purple bines, the other is very five lobed with green bines.

Any idea what they are?

The 'very' five lobed plant.... Its definitely a British variety.

The less five lobed plant... However some are three lobed as well. Dark purple bines on this one.

After a couple of very blustery days, I went out to the garden this morning to find the tips of both bines of my Fuggles broken off  It was going great guns and had reached nearly 2m. I'm guessing that this is now the end of the road for it and it won't grow anymore?
Better news is my other hop plant (Northern Brewer) is still going strong. I had bought both as rhizomes and planted them out in early Feb.

Not necessarily. Hopefully the plant will produce a new leader or else redirect it's energy into the laterals. I wouldn't assume all is lost.

Back up seymours point on that. Mine last year had the top eaten off it when about that size. Was about to chop it down when I realised it had developed a new leader and continued to grow!!! :) Hold out...your hop will likely porduce a new leader and continue onwards and hopwards! :)

Plants are tougher than you give them credit for. If the top being nibbled/broken off was enough to stop them, they'd die out. Then we'd be in trouble!

No more beer for starters! ;-)

From where the bine is broken you should have a leaf node on either side with new buds forming. If not right now then in a few days. Remove the shorter bud and let the bigger one grow, this will be the new lead and should grow to full height by Summer.
