Which of these to pair with Cascade?

Post by DaveGillespie » Wed Jan 20, 2016 8:26 pm

I have 100g of Cascade left and I'm thinking of pairing it with one of my English hops that I have on hand in a pale ale. Any recommendations from the following? Also which of these would go best in a fairly dark ESB?

Challenger
Admiral
Pilgrim
Progress

I'd go with Challenger (Oakham Bishop's Farewell is Challenger/Cascade I think)

It all depends what you're going for. Any of those pairings would be fantastic in the right recipe.

I like oz11's suggestion if you're wanting to emphasize the citrus aspects of Cascade, blending grapefruit with some orange marmalade notes.

I personally would prefer Progress, to bring in some Fuggly notes (earthy, leafy, herbal, floral) which are present in Cascade but very, very subdued.

While not as dark as I was wanting my last ESB was with admiral and goldings and turned out pretty good. To me challenger is similar to goldings so a goldings admiral ESB would be pretty good.
I'm just here for the beer.

I had a beer from s brewery in Essex a while ago. That was gouldings and cascade. Really nice it was too. It was a mistake brew as they doubled their crystal by mistake but didn't realise till too late. Made it anyway and now that's how they make it all the time. Really nice pint.

I was going to ask about progress and cascade as I still have some left from Jims ESB that I need to use up. Think I'll try that for my next beer :)
