Hop Growing 2016
Re: Hop Growing 2016
Will put some pics up to tomorrow but in Yorkshire my EKG Cobbs is racing towards the sun ( training it anti clockwise around the frame ) about 18 inches, the First Gold has started roaring up a much darker green than EKG and about 9 inches and little Miss Fuggles is just nervously popping out at a only an inch or so.
Re: Hop Growing 2016
My cascade and fuggle are about 6ft high! The chinook and golding are still a few inches, ive just fed them all with miracle grow - 2nd year for all of them - I have high hopes

Re: Hop Growing 2016
It's a healthy hops plant I just sprouted from seed collected from the wilds of Kazakhstan in 1993. Amazing, right?!
We brewers hear lots of The-Sky-Is-Falling commodity reports about hop shortages, crop failures due to climate change, pests, diseases, etc…all of which is true, I'm sure. But this little WALL-E seedling of mine is proof those of us who survive the apocalypse will still be able to bitter our beer for many years to come.

Can't be arsed to keep changing this bit, so, drinking some beer and wanting to brew many more!

Re: Hop Growing 2016
I planted two hops this year - the First Gold has four shoots climbing about two foot up some string. The Challenger hasn't even broken the soil so I dug it up to see what was going on. Apparently I buried it 2 foot underground and upside down. There were loads of white shoots all over the place, I imagine they were trying to get to the surface. I've now replanted it with the top poking a centimetre out of the soil. I hope it can re-establish itself ok!

My First Gold (ignore the periwinkle invasion in the background - it's on the to-do list

Re: Hop Growing 2016
Depends whether you are looking from the top or the bottom. I'd say those are growing clockwise.
Beer is my drug of choice.
I don't need anger management classes, I need people to stop pissing me off.
No beer, no fun - know beer, know FUN!
Carrots may be good for your eyes but alcohol is better as it gives you double vision!

Re: Hop Growing 2016
Yeah, ambiguous terminology
I suppose it depends on whether you take the viewpoint of looking down on the plant from above, or the plant's viewpoint... when people say, "it grows anticlockwise", or "train it anticlockwise", I take the plant's perspective, as it is doing the growing
The hops soon corrected me when I trained it the other way to start with
It grows left-handed
grip the twine, thumb in direction of travel, fingers follow the rotation, whichever way you look.

Re: Hop Growing 2016
If you want to be pedantic about it that's fine, but hop growing terminology is: Hops grow by following the direction of travel of the Sun. So East to West, Left to Right and Clockwise!

I like your greenhouse, it looks like the triffids have invaded.
My solitary hop is supposed to be growing up the front of my house (where all the sun is) but it seems to have stalled at two foot. It hasn't been that sunny recently so maybe that's the issue.
