Whole leaf hops

Post by clarets7 » Thu Aug 21, 2025 4:40 pm

Recommendations please for best online suppliers of whole leaf hops, homebrew quantities. I know and regularly buy from TMM, but also used to buy from the Worcester Hop Shop, but looks like they are no longer trading. In the UK I should add :)

A bugbear of mine, the phrase 'whole leaf hops'. If I bought a bag of hops and it was full of 'whole leaves' I'd be really annoyed. They are whole cone or whole flower hops, aren't they?

How did the phrase 'whole leaf hops' ever come to be used?!!

Here they are referred to as "Cones" unless you you go to the page translated into English where the are called "leaf hops"
So it looks like the English are to blame😀

I’ve always known them as ‘whole’ hops. Strictly speaking, in botanical parlance, they’re called strobili, not cones. But they look a bit like cones. If you squint enough they look a bit like leaves too. But we only use hop ‘flowers’ in brewing so not much need for all the confusion.

If possible, organise a group buy from a hop dealer. A 5kg bale can be a bit overwhelming, but it can save quite a lot in today’s money. Although I much prefer to use whole hops I opted for pellets last time - so I could buy in 1kg packs.

Steiner Hops provide an excellent service, ime.

Charles Faram in the uk are happy to supply home brewers nowadays and are starting to pack in 1Kg as well as 5Kg “bales”. So could be worth a look.

Couldn’t find any whole hops in 1kg packs at CF.

It might be that they have yet to start, but I was on a Teams call recently with one of their sales team ( also a former pro brewer and keen homebrewer) and he said that they are moving to 1Kg packs to appeal more to home brewers.

Late to the post, has anyone tried Hopsteiner.co.uk. They do 5Kg bales of Leaf or 1Kg of pellets.

I can highly recommend 1kg pellets from Steiner Hops. I haven't tried their whole hops, but if you need 5kg, I suspect they're fine.
