Just one other question fot you all, if I need to stop the growth as the vine is getting too long should I just pinch the top off?

Cheers

I snapped one of mine by accident and it stopped growing.

You can turn them round (180) and thread them back in though.

Don't see why not. It will just create side shoots instead, like mine has

It appears I don't have any insect pests at the new house, but I still haven't decided on a permanent spot, so I have six hops plants growing in 5 gallon buckets up bamboo canes. They're becoming a huge tangly mess, but appear to be quite healthy. I've always grown them in the ground, trained to 16' strings, so help me out here: do you think I'll still get to harvest any hops this year?

There seems to be a serious lack of ladybirds this year, too.

I've only seen one, so far.

I think it was the cold snap we had.

Heat is stessing them too so not confident of a good harvest this year. :(

You can buy ladybirds, fully grown or larvae - larvae sit leaves instead of flying away and as chivelegs photo shows above, they have an appetite for aphids.

Buy them from here: http://www.greengardener.co.uk/product. ... roduct=177

Set up the right environment for them and they'll stay around your garden and breed for the future too.

Those look like Harlequin ladybird larvae, a non-native species imported from the USA (originally from Asia) which is well on the way to becoming the dominant ladybird out there. Shame about the non-native bit (there's nothing to do about it now), but the good news is that like the USA stereotype they have big appetites!
