You can do, Neem Oil works but you have to keep at them!

i planted progress and challenger hops in pots this winter... now they are as tall as my house!!!

its a pretty big house and when measured the hops were growing 7.5 inces a day!

the problem is i want them to stop. if they climb any higher they are gonna obscure the sky dish.

i was planning on cutting the tip off the bines to stop the upward growth but is this the right thing to do or not?

Oh and ive noticed blackfly on them aswell. bastartdos! anyone know any good products/methods to get rid of em?
I got green fly last year on my hops
Lace wing larve worked wonders, as they eat all of them

Ladybirds are good and hover flies (marigolds attract the hover flies in)
Fermenter(s): Lambic, Wheat beer, Amrillo/Cascade Beer
Cornys: Hobgoblin clone, Four Shades Stout, Wheat Beer, Amarillo/Cascade Ale, Apple Wine, Cider, Damson Wine, Ginger Beer

I'm defiantly going to try and get hold of some plants to, my local garden centre had some in last week but now all gone :( Have to order some. Would like some Target ....

Wheres the best place to get them, or is it too late this year to plant up ?

Unless someone wishes to off-load some cuttings on me

Hallertau might be possible from cuttings I took a few months ago

Send me a PM if you are interested.

Fuggles, Chally and Phoenix (dwarf maybe?). Taken about a week ago. Having tried to slink them up the fixings I have now reached the roof, and had to resort to wiring up the whole back yard!

Image

Another Fuggles and Chally.... In full sun this time... seem not enjoy it as much. Maybe rootball too warm?

WGV is round the front... no pics I'm afraid.Again its in full sun, took off like a rocket, but when it got hot it began to slow. About the same size as the Fuggles in full sun.

Thats very kind but i was wanted some british ale hops not lager ones. Ideally Target as well as it seems harder to get hold of, and therefore more expensive

Mine went absolutely ballistic over the warm, humid weekend and all grew several inches per day. Amazing that I could come back to the plant at lunchtime and visibly see how much it had grown since breakfast! Awesome!

Also interesting to see the subtle differences between the varieties. My sterling plant is the tiniest, most delicate litle plant with little leaves and super thin bines, compared to my saaz plants whose shoots look more like asparagus.

Recieved a cascade from Fat controller today. Looking forward to seeing how well it does in a new environment.

This little fellas First Gold. When i was trimming his big twin down to 3 shoots i cut off about a dozen that were smaller. This is one of them and in a what the hell moment i poked my pinkie into the soil and stuck this shoot in. That was it, no percy thrower nonsense. It took and as a reward its now got a pot of its own. Kind of regret the other shoots i threw away! Next year i'll know better and will be offering first gold, cascade and Bramiling cross plants if the shoots take.

Original first gold plant, its grown well this year.

Bramling cross, like the difference in the leaf shape between the two plants.

Where's the hop grower from Inverness then? :D

Sadly Northdown and Progress didn't for year 2.

EDIT- Just had a closer look at the plants(S) sent to me by fat controller and realised that i am looking at 2 seperate hop plants. See below and let's play guess the hop! If anyone know shout out please.

First Gold 3 lobed leaf.

FC 5 lobed leaf variety unknown.

Built me a trellis for mine, so they have something to creep on now. I'm hoping to make a pergola of sorts whereby they creep over my patio / decking area and provide some cover.

I used my five strongest, biggest plants - from left to right are Mount Hood, Saaz, Saaz, Cascade and Willamette.

My Northdown looks like it is starting to flower. The little side shoot growth is becoming staggered. Thats a sign. Will take pics tomorrow & post them.

Id say its a bit early yet, but it does depend on the variety and where you are in the world.

Last year my first gold gave me cones in late august, if it helps :D
