You know, you're right. Interesting. Chili cook-offs and the like. But don't you guys do that stuff too? Pie contests, the best damson preserves, etc?boingy wrote:America. Land of the competitive barbecue...

Re: Re using hops
But....if you don't have a competition, how will you know who is best?
Drinking:Saison (in bottles), Belgian Dubbel (in bottles), Oud Bruin (in bottles), Olde Ale (in bottles),
Abbey Triple (in bottles), Munich Helles, Best Bitter (TT Landlord clone), English IPA
Conditioning: Traditional bock bier, CAP
Fermenting: Munich Dunkel
Next up: Bitter (London Pride like), ESB
So many beers to make, so little time (and cold storage space)

Re: Re using hops
Just out of interest...should those (possibly) under utilized bittering, taste and late addition hops be used, and the methods discussed above be considered unworkable, how about a revival of that old, perhaps maligned, mash hopping?
Read an article( BYO. I think) which suggested a nice smooth bittering this way. And I can't see there's anything to lose by it.
Just can't quite see a way to store the already used hops...but a microwave image keeps coming to mind!!

Re: Re using hops
no need to store, straight from fv to boiler, as long as you're breweing regularly enough.timbo41 wrote:Just out of interest...should those (possibly) under utilized bittering, taste and late addition hops be used, and the methods discussed above be considered unworkable, how about a revival of that old, perhaps maligned, mash hopping?

Re: Re using hops
But should you have some gap before brewing again? Could dry off between some cheese cloth or something?
Just like trying new ideas!
Re: Re using hops
just freeze them in a bag.

Hi Guys
loving this thread !
If you are on a budget and want to use a good load of dry hops or late additions there is nothing wrong with using the hops for bittering your next brew .I see it as waste not want not there is no need to chuck hops on the compost heap still full of aa just bung them in the freezer, I have done it a few times now and not had any problems!
