Re: Least Favourite Hop?
Going to place an order with Rob the Malt miller later this week and wanted to buy at least 2 hops I've never tried before. A few of the ones I have had in mind are mentioned in this thread, amazing. One mans poison I suppose.

Tried one of the trial brews again on Friday and yes, aftershave is a good description. It had mellowed somewhat from the first tasting in February but still pants. Underlying sour flavour to them and just generally unpleasant. Possibly OK with other varieties but as a single hop don't bother.Beer O'Clock wrote:Then stop putting aftershave in your beerscuppeteer wrote:Oh Aramis, bloody awful French stuff.

Can't be arsed to keep changing this bit, so, drinking some beer and wanting to brew many more!

I tried bobek thinking it was meant to be amazing, and got nothing, very little aroma, a pointless hop

You got away lightly then! I find it like tastes concentrated lemon juice to me.raiderman wrote:I tried bobek thinking it was meant to be amazing, and got nothing, very little aroma, a pointless hop
Re: Least Favourite Hop?
Thats why I tried them, I wanted hat citrussy lemony effect and was disappointed Having moved on to citra simcoe et al I won't be going back!
Re: Least Favourite Hop?
I've had great results in best bitters and saison with bobek. There's likely large variation between crops which won't help. I can't think of a hop that I truly dislike...
Re: Least Favourite Hop?
Sorachi Ace. What a bloody misnomer.

Hi!
Just goes to show how different peoples perception of a hop can differ.
I used Bobek in my recent TTL clone and was a little concerned about some members posts about it being soapy (in fact I have tasted this in other peoples brews (Commercial and non commercial) myself)
However my beer turned out pretty well and doesnt taste soapy at all, in fact its a rather good crack at a TTL clone IMHO.
There many other hops I like but others dont Bramling Cross is an example - its a slightly more fruity Goldings (berry like) whats not to like?
It brings me back to an earlier comment about how hops are perceived in beer, other things like malt bill and water chemistry must play a factor in the perception of hops as they can affect utilisation also?
My water is quite soft yet relatively high in Magnesium, all I add is a bit of gypsum (and Bicarb to darker beers)
Just a thought...

innerstin point. I never use hallertau hop, whenever I've used it in a lagerI haven't liked it, but its used in some very classy commercial beers, so howcome I enjoy it in one context but not the other?Manx Guy wrote:Hi!

Hi RM
I found the same with hallertau - not that I didnt like it but that it turned out different to what I expected.
I expected a noble slightly herbal/spicey hop but got noble and fruity (berry like fruits) !
That was in my Vienna lager, which turned out pretty good for a first real AG lager attempt (AG#4)

Re: Least Favourite Hop?
My wife, despite me having only one dry day during the six nations and returning back from twickenham brewing the worlds deadliest farts - particularly after the ireland game, theres something about an overload of guinness and red wine which adds body viscosity and sheer bloody mindedness to a well brewed fart, but I digress....as I was about to say, despite this my wife is a wonderful woman and she arrived back from tesco with an armful of interesting bottles including a St Peters blonde ale, hopped with hallertau and it was georgeous. Just proves how confusing it can be!
