My wife's farts smell of roses! But back to the hops. I much prefer hallertau hersbrucker to mittelfruh. I've made lagers with both and hersbrucker wins hands down for me!

Had some Cluster hops a coupla years back, and they were so bad I thought I'd never again encounter such a horrible hop. Wrong! Got some Citra recently and used only a small amount to "test the water" as they smelled incredibly strongly of cat piss in the bag. That small amount (20g,soak) have totally ruined the ale. I won't chuck it; maybe 3 months down the line it'll be Ok.

.... Which leads me to wonder if I'd got a dodgy bag,as I bought them on the strength of spectacular reviews and opinion, mainly on Jim's. To say I was disappointed is putting it very mildly. Do they normally smell of cat piss out of the bag? The ale itself smells and tastes like a lorry-load of mashed grapefruit - ugh. Lord knows what carnage would have been wreaked if I'd used more. Long live the mighty Challenger (tho' I notice one deviant on here who doesn't like them - sheesh, some people,eh?) .

I ave done 2 brews with Citra, one single hop, one using Challenger as a bittering hop. Both smelled like cats piss when brewing and fermenting. However left to mature, 3-4 weeks in polpin, the taste was excellent with both brews with a smell more like beer than piss.

In the single hop phase I'm going through, I made a single hop Chinook - and wrote about it earlier in this thread - it was absolutely foul IMO.
But I've since dry hopped a keg with 20g of Stavinski Goldings and what a difference that has made! I think it may now be one of my favourite beers. The herby, musty flavour is still there from the Chinook but now provides quite a robust background to the very fruity Slovenian dry hops. Nice combo. I guess some hops work well with others.

mittlephreu or whatever they call it...Phookin horrible.

Challenger is a star, northdown and northern brewer brilliant, Nelson fantastic in pales...Cascade and other americans really good.

Just planted a Bramlin cross in the garden. Its shooting up like a good un so we will see what this brings us

Sorry to drag this thread up again, but... just purchased a Duchy Jubilee IPA from Waitrose. Thought oh that'll be nice! Got it home, read the label... Sovereign hops... bugger! My fears were correct. Bloody horrible. Did a pale with sovereign a few months ago and still the same taste, glad it wasn't me. Not a nice hop at all. Sorry Waitrose but you need a decent beer tester before you put beer on the shelf. :-(

I'll get me coat...

As for hops, surely it depends on how your using them and what in? Some of these tales of musty beers etc sound like infections or oxidation. Although I'm sure I've read that cluster is pretty useless. That's probably more down to the fact that it's been superseded by more kerazy US hops though.

Hi out of English hops i hate WGV it's just down right nasty.I think Bram X has been unfairly judged because i have had some fantastic results at competition using this hop.I also love North Down, Progress,Challenger and Soveriegn.I have never fancied Target so i can't comment. I found Willemette also very boring but it's cousin Glacier is a diffrent beast. I have latley found the glory that is Centenial this hop is awsome and a good choice if you can't find the popular hop Amarillo. I also love to use Crystal inalot of my American ales it's so floral, spicey and bags of orange flavours.
