Pesky Hop Pellets
I am thinking about brewing the tim taylor landlord clone in wheeler over the weekend as it's got such a good press on this forum and it's a pint I like.
Anyway, I can only get stryrian goldings in pellet form from the homebrewshop I go to. How much should I reduce the hop quantities by if I use pellets?
Also, the rest of the hops will be whole hops; will my brupaks hop strainer be able to cope with the pellets?

Thanks Daab, I think I'll leave brewing until tomorrow and hopefully someone will be able to give some info before then. Wheeler suggests 20% less hops, but as he doesn't use them I'm not 100% sure I trust this (DaaB wrote:You do require less pellets but I don't know the numbers, if no one else gets back i'll dig them out. I doubt the Brupaks hopstrainer will cope as pellets tend to form a powdery sludge. You could try whirlpooling like the septics...stir up the wort so it forms a whirlpool, the hops and trub collect in the middle and the wrot can be siphoned/drawn off, sounds a bit far fetched to me but apparently it works.

Well, if I'm not brewing I'm popping out for a pint for some inspiration

Beersmith seems to think the IBUs are increased by a factor of 1.115 when using pellets. I've used Amarillo pellets in an IPA before and I thought this was fairly accurate.
I would have thought that if you're using pellets alongside whole hops that the whole hops would filter out the pellet sludge, but I've never tried them both together. To be honest I didn't bother doing any filtration when collecting my wort the time I used pellets and it all settled out in the primary - the beer was fine.

On the topic of hop pellets. I have some chinook pellets and I want to dry hop with them in the barrel - am I asking for trouble or will they drop out?
my usual schedule which normally results in a clear beer 1 week after barrelling is to add finings to the primary after 10 days and leave overnight, then syphon to barrel primed with sterilised beer/priming sugar mix & if adding dry hops to do so in a muslin bag in the barrel.
I've never used pellets before and was wondering if I would get problems.
