Post by Belto » Wed Mar 07, 2007 9:44 am

I have followed a lot of posts regarding the growing of Hops 2006
I think I would like to try and it is early enough in the season
What are the final results.
Was it sucessful
Any brewing experience using them
What type is best fro brewing.
Did anyone suffer from pests other than slugs, snails
What is the best source for supply
Any other usefull information available

I was just about to start a similar thread. Does anyone no who is supplying them this year (i followed the beer essentials link in the other thread but couldn't see hide nor hair of hops).
Iv'e a 12 foot fence thing at the bottom of my garden thats a bit of an eyesore so growing hops up it would be ideal (do the dwarf varities get that tall).
Also very importantly has any dog owners on here grown hops (they are supposed to be toxic to dogs) are the flowers out of reach of our canine friends (SWMBO would kill me if i inadvertantly was responsible for the posioning of one of the dogs)

You're not going to see them on the website - you need to e-mail him to see if he's selling plants this year (I bought some off him last year). Last year he sold first gold plants for £2 each + £2 postage and packing IIRR.

By the way, although the plant will grow well don't expect too many hop cones in the first year

The only place I could find hop plants for £1.99 last year was beer essentials, otherwise they were £6 - £7 each. I think beer essentials was just cheap, rather than the other places being expensive.

Ok thats good to know, nobody likes to think they are paying over the odds but if thats the going rate then thats fine.
I'll try emailing beer essentials first just in case they are selling them at similar prices to last year.

I think £6+ is very reasonable. Once you've got a rhizome you won't need another one.

We have some wild hops which I have transplanted into a tub in the garden. Don't know what variety they are but the manor house in our village used to be inhabited by monks so no-doubt they planted them. Might be getting a bit late in the season as I transplented a few lengths of rhizome ~ 6 weeks ago and the buds were just emerging. You have to be careful as it's very easy to snap the buds off.

happy hopping

Good work Delboy 8)

One of the good things about about hops from this source, which I forgot to mention, is that they come in plant form - so all you need to do is plant them, not deal with the root.

I'd go with First Gold personally; I've never heard of Golden Tassels as a brewing hop :?
