What is your favourite hop?

Post by bosium » Fri Sep 03, 2010 3:02 pm

And what flavour do you perceive from it the most?

I love lots of hops, but if I were put to it, it's Saaz for me. I just love that delicate, floral spicey flavour.

I don't really have a favourite but I seem to be going through a bit of a Styrian phase at the moment. Just dryhopped a bitter with fuggles though and I'm quite pleased with that as well (never used fuggles as a dry hop before).

Funny, I know they're not exactly the same, but I tried two beers with Bobek - a stout (OK, OK) and an english-style IPA. I really didn't like the flavour, although I love the lemony / citrusy character of TTL, I didn't find I got the same taste from the Bobek I used.

I'm actually in a bit of an EKG phase at the moment - my local brewpub makes a pale, hoppy bitter a bit like TTL called Puck's Folly, but using 100% EKG and I can't get enough of it at the moment.

What does Liberty taste like, compared to say a Hallertau?

Have you ever tried Mt Hood? I have a flowering Mt Hood plant but never brewed with it or tasted it before even.

Hi!

Liberty to me is very like Hallertau M - slightly less spicey, but possibly a bit bolder (herbal) - the AA of the harvest I used were 4.9% so this might explain why I perceive it to be a bit bolder...

I have some Mt. Hood but have yet to use them... As far as I know both were bred along with Magnum to be US domestic replacements for Hallertau/Northern brewer. So i imagine that Liberty & Mt. Hood are similar to each other with (accordinging to Palmer) Liberty being described as Fine & Mt Hood as mild...

But then I wouldn't rely on my 'taste buds' as I dont get anything of the Styrian citrusy character from Green Bullet that people talk about, they are noble-like to me!

I don't like this hop on it's own. I've made a couple of Styrian Stunner-like beers and find the taste to be soapy!?! Any else think this of Bobek?

SiHoltye, you know that's exactly the flavour I get too. My stout in particular tasted of shampoo
I decided to give it one more chance, and made a pale bitter with EKG, and just threw the rest of the bag of Bobek in at 0 mins. Jury's out till I get it in the keg.

Good to hear I'm not going mad bosium! I used 75g late on split for flavour and 80degC steep in a pale 1.040 bitter. I wonder if true styrian goldings are like this? Isn't Bobek a replacement hop? Either way I've had enough of subbing S.G. with Bobek, not nice IMO. I've just done a large bottle of Chimay Blue and can still feel the soapyness around the back sides of my tongue!
