What's every body's favourite hop? And why? Both bitter and flavouring types

I can't really say what my favourite hop is, because I'm far too new to brewing. :(

However, I have noticed that a few of beers I really like claim to use Styrian Goldings: Bitter and Twisted and Wychcraft, and, I think I read somewhere, Deuchars IPA. Each has a citus-like flavour that I like in beer. W&P have a recipe which uses them (Mitchells Lancaster Bomber) which it is claimed has a grapefruity-taste, which I may have a go at at some point.. :)

I have to say Goldings only because I have a MASSIVE bag of them from the Hogs back brewery (they thought I wanted a kilo when I phoned up asking for 100g  ) and use them up at any opportunity B)

I would say challenger is my all round favourite, closely followed by the good old fuggle. Both can be used for either copper or late hops, and the challenger in particular has a rather nice flavour when used on its own in a beer. :P

Goldings are OK, but a bit flowery for my taste.

Centennial. Wow! Amazing aroma, flavour, and subtle bittering with good AA%

I'm fairly new to brewing too, so haven't yet learnt fully to recognise the individual hop flavours.

I'm just trying to brew a variety of different styles of beers to see what works best, all have a different hop variety & malt.

But I have to say, I think the majority of my brews have used Fuggles, Goldings & Challengers. That's not through personal preference though, just what the recipe I chose at random called for.

I haven't tried all of 'em, but I like Cascade.

I haven't tried enough to comment with any authority.

I've used Cascade, Fuggles, Goldings, and First Gold so far....I like Goldings quite a bit, and Cascade is very good for flavour and aroma if you like a flowery/citrus character.

Man, that's like asking a parent which child is your favorite!
I can say, I haven't met a hop I dont like, well, I'm not real fond of Chinook! But even Chinook has it's uses. Geez, I can't say which,I really like Styrian Golding, Saaz, EKG, Fuggle, WGV, Challenger, Hallertau. And Sterling is an awesome hop also. There's no way I could select a single hop as my fave, just not happening!! B)

I quite like Tettnang as a finishing hop for golden ales.

Styrians are really nice as are goldings though I think I've been using goldings a bit too often recently and will start using other hops for a change.

I'll be unoriginal in saying that I like challenger as a bittering hop but I've got some Northern Brewer to play with when I finally move house and can start brewing again.

I'm hearing a lot of good things about the styrian hop.

I did a Styrian Stunner brew using the new aurora super styrian hop at the weekend, and this weekend I plan on doing one with standard styrian so as to compare the 2.

Should be interesting.

Unfortunately my experience is too limited at the moment for comparison purposes :(

I think to get a good knowlege hops, I may well use a template brew, and use different hops in each brew to get a feel for all the different qualities of each hop ;)

It should indeed :)

Super styrians are used as one of the copper hops in Deuchars IPA (alongside fuggles); unfortunately it would be hard to pick out a distinctive super styrian flavour in Deuchars because they use huge amounts of late and post-boil hops (styrian goldings, williamette, fuggles and goldings)! Must be quite a pricey beer to make!

Anyway, looking forward to hearing what you think of the super styrian brew and how it compares to normal styrians :)

It's worth remembering that the Styrian Golding and Super Styrian (Aurora) are two different varieties. One's descended from Fuggles and the other is from Northern Brewer. They may have similar brewing properties (I've not used Aurora so I can't comment) but one's not just a more bitter version of the other.

I'm fond of Styrian Goldings too.

Dave, got a Deuchars IPA recipe? Is it just base malt plus lots of late hopping?
