How to store loose hops

Post by Vossy1 » Mon Aug 21, 2006 10:58 pm

I got my order through from the Hop Shop today.

I was expecting the hops to be the vacumn packed block variety, but they are loose inside a giant foil bag.

Can these be stored frozen?
Is this the best storage method these loose hops?

I was going to freeze them, in aliquots of say, 1oz, assuming they were the block type?

Now I'm not sure what to do

Yes its a big shiny foil bag Daab.

Can they be frozen?

The bags a bit big for my fridge :(

I, like all people on this forum, like shiny things, but I'd have to wear sun glasses every time I opened the fridge with that in it

If they are Brupaks. I actually prefer them. They seem to be better quality. I don't know if they are or the compression done by Morris and Hanbury to form the blocks is detrimental but I find the Brupak hops to have better aroma over the M&H ones.

It is considered the best method of storage is freezing but DaaB has good results from just refridgerating. Either way they need to be stored in an airtight container preferably vaccum sealed so no moisture can get at them. You ordered a bulk bag IIRC

Its at times like this that I wish I had one of those vacumm pack jobbie machines.

I think I'll pack them into smaller sizes and store them in the kegerator door.

I know frozen items can loose their aroma even when vac packed in polythene bags, so I can't see hops being different.

Might freeze some as well just to see the difference
