Which hops to buy in the USA

Post by och29 » Thu Jul 25, 2013 3:07 pm

I've posted something similar in the Equipment section and in short I'll be getting a few things shipped from the US and thought it would be a good idea to get a few things that are hard/expensive to buy here. Someone suggested hops and I was wondering what people suggest and where to get them from.

I would go for some Ahtanum and some Sorachi Ace if you can find them. You just don't seem to be able to get them over here....

I'd have to agree with Ahtanum.... I've enjoyed any beer I've tasted with them. Not so keen on Sorachi ace myself.
Have you looked at any american forums to see if there are any unusual/ experimental hops that we don't have over here ?

Ended up going for just Ahtanum since I couldn't find Sorachi Ace anywhere with reasonable shipping.

Cool! Like I said in the other post, if you're selling I'll definitely have some off you :)

When numpty customs mistake them for another variety of herbal matter rather than what they really are! In May I came back from the national collection with several bags of cuttings in my boot. On passing through a village the Old bill were out in force stopping whoever looked suspicious, I bet I would have had a hard time explaining the foliage in my boot to the untrained eye!

I ordered pellets and they went through customs without a hitch. I declared them as hops on the form and the box wasn't opened so guess they don't have a problem with them.

For the record, what American varieties can one obtain in the U.K.? I am an American; therefore, I have no idea as to what is available in the U.K.

You can get most varieties although some don't seem to make it over here in any great quantities (for the hombrewer at least).

HERE is an example of one of the better suppliers over here....
