Identifying Hops

Post by Old Hooky » Wed Jun 18, 2014 4:44 pm

I have a hop plant growing in my garden which last year yielded a decent crop. I also have planted a Fuggles rhizome in the garden. But in a field out the back there is a hop growing which also bears its fruits but I don't know how to identify the variety. All I can say is the leaves are a lot darker than the ones in my garden. Is there a way to determine the variety of the plant?

In short no. Wild seedlings are quite common over most of the country. If its been there some time it will bear little if any resemblance to any commercial variety. If the hops have a good aroma come harvest time then get a brew on with them. Some of my best single hopped beers have been from wild stock.

Can't be arsed to keep changing this bit, so, drinking some beer and wanting to brew many more!
