What Hops do I need & what quantity ?

Post by daddies-beer-factory » Sun Jun 22, 2014 3:27 pm

I am planning to buy all my ingredients for 3 x 50 L brews, but I need help with the hop bill.

I was planning 2 american pale ales & maybe 1 english pale ale.

my second to last beer (american pale ale) was really nice, i used magnum to bitter & cascade/centinnial to aroma. (90 mins 100g magnum - 15 mins 50g cascade & 50g centennial - 5 mins 50g cascade & 50g centennial)

so the 2 american pale ales i am going to aim for OG 1047 & would be happy with same/ similar hops as above and aim at 34 IBU (possibly put the 1st hop addition in at 30 mins)

the 1 english pale ale any suggestions (OG 1047 & IBU 35)

I need to know what hops to order for all 3 beers & the hop recipe.

Thanks in advance !

Don't you have brewing software? Even the free ones make it fun to play with recipes.
I brew therefore I ... I .... forget

GOLDINGS* for flavor and aroma. Challenger or first gold to bitter.

*I really like goldings.
I'm just here for the beer.

So you liked a magnum Centennial/ Cascade beer - a lot of people say Magnum is clean bittering (some don't like it at all). But, for an APA I would say (even if it costs a little more) to bitter with Centennial - it's a great hop and will add to the APA flavour . Then late hop with Citra/ Centennial. Amazing combo. I would say bitter to about 25 IBU with centennial then late hop with a combination of Centennial/ Citra to another 15IBU with additions at 15min 0min and a dry hop. For 50L I would be looking at a minimum 250g late and a 100g dry hop.

Equally, a fantastic combination is Simcoe/ Centennial for bittering and then Citra/ Simcoe late.

I'm a big believer in bittering with hops that are true to style. It's true that some late hops are not great for bittering but you'll quickly learn which ones to avoid.

No not yet, I was playing with a couple of the free ones whilst planning these 3 beers, but need a little help with the hops still to get the recipe balanced !

Thanks all - I used some free brewing software online (brewersfriend) to design the 3 beers & get the IBU levels/balance right, I have ordered all the ingredients :

2 American Pale ales :bittering with magnum, aroma hops are centinnial

1 IPA :bittering with challenger, aroma also challenger (1st brew using only 1 hop)
