Hops for a rye PA?

Post by Aaron » Sun Apr 12, 2015 4:27 pm

Hi,

I'm planning on brewing a rye pale ale using maris otter and crystal rye. I have some equinox hops that i'm considering using, possibly with something else. Can anyone suggest any hops they think will complement the rye? I'm thinking something with a bit of a spicy taste. Maybe Saaz?

If anyone has had great success with a rye pale ale, what hops can you recommend?

Cheers

Sterling. Derived from Saaz, spicy, but fruitier and higher AA. Good match for rye.

Well I'm drinking a beer loosely based on Adnams Ghostship, that uses Crystal Rye and the hops are Chinook, Motueka and Citra. Very nice it is too.

I recommend crystal very spicy with tangerine flavours.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I've got some columbus so i'll pair that with the equinox and possibly some sterling.

That sounds good. Crystal is a good shout too I reckon.

I've not heard much about crystal. Is that a US hop?

Yeah it is but it is super versatile. I have used crystal in pale ales I.p.a., wheats, Rye beers you can use it in lagers as well. It is super nice but it is best used late in the boil or dry hopped it will be a waste using crystal early in the boil because the spicy tangerine flavours are something special a real shame to waste. I would use a super clean low co chumle hop like Magnum (I use Amirillo a lot with crystal) and then use crystal late boil or flame out. This is what I would do?

Hmm sounds like a nice hop. I see maltmiller doesn't stock it. Know where I can source some from a recent crop?

Everywhere seems to have 2012 crop. I ordered some from Brewuk for £2.40 yesterday as it happens. They are even cheaper here:
