Hop Harvest 015

Post by jinjahbiscuit » Fri Oct 16, 2015 8:37 pm

A simple question: When can we expect to see this years hops in the Home Brew stores? Will there be a mad scramble to buy them fresh and stock up?

I think they are being dried/processed now, so I suspect we'll start to see some discounts on the last couple of years crops soon then the 2015 harvest around january/february

There's always a scramble for the more wanted ones. Main problem is this year on the continent the harvest has been quite bad. Czech republic had the worst harvest in almost half a century and overall yields are down about 25%. The US was ok, as
well as UK in general. No brewing for me with saaz this year I guess.

Thanks for the replies guys, I'll check out the Bushel of Hops to see what they have and try to plan a years worth of brewing! Though very much a novice really.

This is their first year supplying direct to the home brew market, so a leap of faith for them. See my post in the suppliers section.

Personally I have known them for over 25 years, they are some of the loveliest people you could ever wish to meet. The Cascade and Bramling Cross I have from this years harvest are second to none in quality. Bear in mind if you place an order the following varieties are the smallest acreage crop they grow: Cascade, Phoenix and Goldings. So if you want these order soon before they run out.

Thanks, I thought I'd take a punt on them and ordered some cascade and phoenix yesterday. It's interesting to read about them using charcoal kilning for the cascade. I'll be making a couple of pale ales in the near future - this week hopefully

will they be growing more varieties?

I've ordered from them also, Admiral, Cascade, Pheonix and Pilgrim, so I think a pale ale and a porter are on the cards sometime soonish.

Thanks for the link! :D

They will, but its a work in progress. They will plant up one or two more varieties this winter but as this is a completely separate enterprise from the main farm they have to be careful that what they choose is commercially viable even on this small scale. Personally I'm hoping they'll choose some heritage varieties which aren't grown anymore. We'll just have to wait and see next year. 8)

I'll be sure to pass on your positive comments when I see them next. :)

What do you mean by heritage varieties? Can you name some you think would be good to bring back?

Thanks for the link. Really interesting - I'm looking forward to receiving my order. Be interested to see how these young hops compare with the year or so old ones I can normally get for the usual homebrew suppliers.

I second that idea. I find the opportunity to get hops straight from the grower inspiring...

I'm interested in abushelofhops too. Do they give an AA% on the packet. The web site only gives a range that is too large to use for bittering hops.
