Yeast Mess up?

Post by sprintbrew02 » Fri Oct 12, 2007 6:49 pm

I did my first ever brew today, I used a Muntons Yorkshire bitter kit. I tried to re-hydrate the yeast before hand but I do not know whether I've messed up or not re-hydrated at 34c. And mixed it with the wort at 26c

If the yeast does not do its work, is it possible possible to use the same wort and put new yeast in it? what would a beter temperature be?

What can I do?

I think you'll be OK, 20 degrees would have been better, 18 - 20 degrees is ideal for fermentation, so try to get the FV somewhere in that range, if it hasn't started after 12 - 24hrs you can pitch more yeast into the same wort.

Did the Muntons kit give advice on yeast rehydration, what did they say?

If you do have to pitch another yeast get some safale s-04, your LHBS will have some i'm sure for about £1.00 8)

if its dried yeast, just follow the manufactures instructions. some are designed to be rehydrated at 35-40C. If you do rehydrate, you should try and attemper the yeast by adding wort every few mins until the temp has been brought down to that of the main batch.

at worst by skipping this you kill a percentage of your yeast. but there should be enough to get things started. at 26C you should see a fairly quick start to fermentation less than 12hrs.

as wez says, you can always pitch more.

Hey,

Thanks. I came home at about 22:15 and heard some bubling, so all must be ok then.

Thanks

thats excellent. It is one of the most disapointing parts of brewing when a fermentation doesnt start
