Frozen Yeast

Post by Buzz » Wed Nov 07, 2007 4:35 pm

Hi guys, I just retrieved my tin of hops from the freezer for today's brew and found that I had inadvertently stuck a sachet of dried yeast in there too.

It can only have been in there about a month, maybe two at the most. Would this still be okay to use in the future or do you think I should chuck it? It's still inside its best before date but, I'm just worried the freezing may have affected it. On the other hand, as it's a dried yeast, perhaps it wont affect it at all. Anyone know? :?

If it was wet yeast without a cryoprotectant then it would almost certainly be dead. As a dried yeast? I dunno.

:D I successfully keep my dried yeast in the freezer i think the secret is to keep moisure out i think you should try your yeast you could always make a starter and see if it works prior to adding it to your wort

I also keep my dry yeast in the freezer.
We also keep the bread yeast in the freezer for months and months, maybe years and it still puffs up the dough time and time again..

Looks like I'm worrying needlessly. I'll make up a starter like Slurp suggests, just to make sure.

Cheers
