What sort of temperature should you start thinking about cooling your fermentation at to stop unwanted flavours - thinking about S04 in particular

thanks - mine was at 24' after being left over night so I've put the fermenter into my boiler with some cold water at the bottom and some ice... the temp has dropped to about 20' - I assume that after a day or two, once the fermentation has slowed, it will generate less heat itself and so I wont have to add any more ice

I found keeping the temperature below 20 is the key to fermenting quality ales. I set the ambient temperature to 17 or 18 depending on how much heat the yeast is generating itself.
