I made up a 150ml starter for the dregs of 2 bottles of 'Zest' last night. It's fermenting now but the initial fermenting smell is appley. Zest is a lemongrass flavoured beer, is it this, or does the Hop Back yeast smell appley while it does it's thang? Alternatively the appley cidery smell could be bad news.
I'll wait 'til it ferments out and drink the starter beer to judge if ok.
