Wyeasts arrived

Post by Martin the fish » Mon May 12, 2008 9:45 am

After trying unsuccesfully a few times from grape and grain to order online and then missing their call and then getting their answerphone my yeasts arrived :-)
They were very well packed with a disposable ice pack thingy and wrapped in bubble wrap. They were still quite cold when i opened the parcel. :D I ordered London Ale III and Ringwood.
I smacked Ringwood as soon as it arrived. I say smacked, i had a bit of trouble locating the inner bag at first and certainly couldn't break it by 'smacking it'. I finally got it to break by squeezing the bejesus out of it. :) I gave it a damn good shake and then left it for two hours in room that is 22C ish. It expanded up well so i cut the top corner off with sterilised scissors and poured the culture into 2 ltr's wort that i had put into a sterilised demijohn.

When it comes to splitting this down, how many of what size should i split this into? Also, could i then 'grow' one of the amounts with 2 ltr wort again and repeat procedure? Or would i be better off skimming the krausen?

Your comments appreciated. :)

Thanks DaaB. I'm quite keen to give things a go and see how they turn out.
So far most things have been a success so i'm keen to see if i can get a nice little yeast bank going.

I like the Wyeast packets and i was v pleased with the packing and delivery from grain and Grape. Really keen to use ringwod on my Orc Slayer recipe. :D

Ooh, i didn't know that. Daily rousing eh? Sounds like a pain to me-or something i'm likely to forget for days on end. How long can you reasonably leave beer in the FV for? I have left some of mine for 15 days. But they came out fine and tasted great-to me. 8)

Today the culure is just starting to slow. I have given it a good swirl whenever i could and whilst in my room every 15 mins or so it got a good swirl. It'll be ready to split in the morning. 8)

I'm gonna split into 6 PET's. I make a starter and grow it a bit from all my liquid yeasts before i pitch them. So 6 split's should be cool.

I've really gotta make a stir plate.

I quite enjoy all this yeast stuff. It gives me things to do whilst i'm not brewing. London Ale III is next. 8)

Your being impatient like me
I give mine a good swirl whenever i can and mine fermented out in about 36 hrs. I split into 6 x PET's and they have a good half inch now settled in the bottom. :D They are now living in my yeast fridge. :D

I'm going to smack my London III tomorrow.

Ringwoods have settled out quite nicely now. 8)

Playing with yeast is almost as much fun as brewing
