First Yeast Starter

Post by Western Brewer » Sat Oct 07, 2006 6:10 pm

Hi All,
Just made up my first starter. According to White labs web site for a high gravity brew you should make a 2 pint starter which I hope I have done correctly. I got some idea from a web site. I boiled just over 2 pints of water and added 4oz of light spraymalt and boiled it for 20 minutes. Then I cooled it to around 70 degrees and added the vial of yeast (WLB530) and decanted it to a demijohn with an airlock fitted. The OG of the beer I'm making is 1090. Anyway hoping to brew either tomorrow or Monday depending on the state of the starter.
Any comments on the starter I've made? Is it going to work?

I hope when you say 70 degrees, you are talking Fahrenheit?

Ok! Well it's bubbling in the demijohn but theres no real head on it which to be honest I expected. Should I continue with this or get a new yeast and not bother with the starter. It's bubbling about once every 15 seconds BTW.

Did you aerate the starter?

It can take a day or two for a head to form on the starter in my experience.
