Freezing wort for starter

Post by Scooby » Thu Feb 15, 2007 2:39 pm

I’m planning on freezing some wort to use as a starter for the next brew. Is it as straight forward a drawing some cooled wort from the fermenter into sterilised container prior to pitching yeast and freezing?

After defrosting I presume a short boil would be advisable before making up the starter?

Has anyone tried this? I think I know someone who will have

Sorry DaaB I know your more than just someone

My question is similar, but coming from a different angle - I saved wort from my last brew (prior to boiling) and put it into a plastic water bottle which was then frozen. The bottle wasn't sanitised. However I plan to boil this wort for 10 or 15 minutes before cooling and pitching my yeast.

Is there anything wrong with this approach?

DaaB, I would have thought boiling the starter wort would kill the nasties? (not that I know anything about bacteria)

This is a great idea. I hate having to buy DME when I'm buying liquid yeast.
