ive left my yeast in the wort i used to start it , you mentioned pouring off the water but there isnt any , just fermented wort . does that make a difference? i only made it up a week ago y'see .

aha i'm getting it now, :) unfourtunately last night i took it out of the fridge , shook it up and added a teaspoon of sugar to see if it would wake up. this morning there were bubbles rising to the top and the beginnings of a head forming . but i didnt think about oxidization ! i will have a sip later when i get home and see if its gone off.

I've scavenged about 100ml of slurry from my mini-mash and put it in the fridge. Is that enough to get going if I make up a starter?

Also DaaB, you've said a few times that the instructions on your site aren't a 'real' starter - what's the difference then?

lastly, do you pitch a starter whilst it is still actively fermenting, or wait for it to die down or even settle?

Thanks DaaB, I get the distinction - it's between a starter and a wake up call.

If I'm working from my 100ml of yeast from the fridge, I take it that I only need a wake up rather than a starter because I have more than 83ml?

And if I follow that process, do I wait until it's settled down or pitch it when it's still bubbling madly?
