What do you think guys - does it justify the price? Anyone used it?

I've not tried it, but if you're a TT Landlord fan it'd be worth it, especially if you do like Jim does Here

It'd work out about the same price per brew as using Safale 8)

Would love to do that. Not sure SWYMBO would be happy with murky brown stuff in the fridge though :(

Just seems a bit expensive to me. I would love to try it if they make it part of their normally priced range though.

A bit of a cheeky price! But I guess we live in a capitalist society, so good luck to him. I wonder why this is only available at one shop and in short supply.

H&G do it too, at the same price.

It is a bit cheeky, I've had special order White Labs yeast at usual price.

starter yeast

Post by Belto » Tue Mar 27, 2007 12:15 am

Has anyone considered the milk bottle style of getting a yeast starter.
i.e.
I have used it twice now being a newbie. No Problems
Yeast needs oxygen to work correctly, but in an enclosed environment like a milk bottle the total quantity of oxygen available is limited to ulage space above.
If it was open would there be a greater activity on the yeast due to the amount of free oxygen avaiable :?:

It's a bigger pack - the 'Activator' size. The usual packs and prices in the UK refer to the much smaller 'Propagator' packs which definitely need a starter (even Wyeast says so). The Activator pack size has five times more yeast cells.

Curiously enough it seems that stores like Northern Brewer in the US only sell the Activator packs and charge under $6 a pack.

A pint starter is barely worth the effort as you'll get very little yeast growth. It will get the yeast 'awake' but not much more.

The VSS (Very Special Strains) limited edition wyeast are only available in the activator pack. I ordered 2 Rogue Pacman packs in the previous VSS from Brupaks via H&G. I'm pretty sure I didn't pay that much more for them.

The propogator packs are produced for export only. They are no longer available in the US and haven't been for some time.

If we got charged £3 for a liquid yeast in a pack you could pretty much pitch straightaway like the Yanks then I'd use a liquid yeast all the time. I can understand why they are so popular there....

It's interesting to note that Brouwland in Belgium charge £3.50 for the small packs and £5 for the big ones - postage is £8 though so you're better off getting them as part of a bigger order.

I ordered one from H&G last week and will brew with it next week. I am unsure at present wether to just pitch it when it has finished activaing or trying to grow it in a demi john for a few days first. I joined CBA and i am sure someone in their has detailed how to turn one pack of yeast into nearly a gallon of yeast before pitching. I have ordered another copy of the atricle today. I need to increast the volume because i want to make 54 litres to go into 3 cornies. I dont drink much..........honest

Gillian Grafton, an article which is in the CBA fact sheet on yeast.

TTL Yeast

Post by bluesboy » Wed Mar 28, 2007 11:51 pm

Just brewed with that yeast 17/03/07 to make a TTL, just supping the first tastings out of the corni as I type. Excellent yeast finished very quickly producing an nice balance of hop and malt, with clean refeshing finish.

I was able to capture some it to culture up for later use (saving on the expensive) price.
