F*ck me! Are you planning to go commercial DAB? You could brew up a tun with that!

going to have a crack at this one for my next brew. have 8 botts of the golden liquid settling in the fridge just now. i know you only strictly need 3 botts, but you can't be too careful. going to share the collected yeast in two botts under chilled, previously boiled water and keep in the fridge until i get some spray malt.

QUOTE (Daft as a Brush @ May 6 2006, 09:14 PM)You should be able start off with just the one bottle,  8 will be plenty and lots of fun to drink  B)
oh yeh. notes so far: consumed two bottles preparing equipment, boiling / cooling water. used bettadine for the first time, it looks like dirty water doesn't it. gives no indication that its actually doing anything - a confidence thing i know.

sunk 3 more botts transferring dregs to a sterilised container with a little chilled water, then to the fridge. strong stuff this summer lightning.

maths have gone to pot somewhere, i've 3 botts left  i'll be looking to make a starter from these for pitching the weekend.

after numerous distractions tomorrow i'm finally set to brew a batch of summer lightning. have just removed a good bit of the liquid covering the reactivited yeast that’s been multiplying for a week or more and added another 400ml of spraymalt to kick it off again in preparation for pitching tomorrow. there's a good bit of yeast built up now so i'm hoping for a good start.

Nice one FM, a good choice of brews. Let us know how it goes and take plenty of pics B)

just out of curiosity i did this recipe (daab's) and used the sl yeast from a bottle that i stepped up.
i am getting a really slow ferment i.e. its been 9 days now and its just under 1.020.
it is quite a cool ferment though. just wondering how long your ferment was? and FG?
cheers

oh well i will just give it time and see what happens, just thought i would check to see what other people have found. may stir up the yeast a bit later

well guys, the pic shows a nice yeast head on the embryonic summer lightning at day 3. over night on day one there was surface yeast cover and at day two it hit the lid. all seem's fine at this time.

brew day was a right B and i don't mean bugger. there was a lot of flour in the grain, leading to more stuck sparges. i know andy is getting trouble using ss braid like i am. doing some reading of palmer he says to to use 22mm braid as this allegedly doesn't collapse under the weight of the grain. i'm seriously considering ditching the braid and manufacturing a 15mm copper pipe manifold, for certain i'm getting nothing but hassle from the braid.

one more big pain is the 27ltr boiler. i'm having to watch for over boils right through boil process. the obvious conclusion is the the boiler is simply not big enough. considering going plastic bigger boiler, perhaps 35 ltr. anyone got any suggestions on the optimum size for 5 gal brew.

des, your enquiry about ferment and fg - i got a gravity of spot on 1050 @ 27 lts. after boil i got 19 ltrs in the fv. i made this up to 23 ltr with cold water. just what the fg was i dont know. sorry.

to finish on an up note - here's a nice pic of the abbot ale clone that is sadly no more. its a big pic that refuses to be small.

QUOTE (Daft as a Brush @ Jun 3 2006, 09:51 PM) have you seen my 'http://www.forumforfree.com/forums/inde ... wtopic=924' in the equipment section. Your round cooler would be an ideal candidate , fancy being a 'test pilot'. ;)  :D

that's a mighty fine false bottom you've got there BB, don't mind in the least using my round cooler as a test pilot. ;) it won't be for a while though, i start a new job tomorrow which means a month at bicester & home to sunny plymouth at weekends. B) looking forward to all those lonely evenings - bicester has a wetherspoons just down the road from where i'm staying :) don't tell the missus ;)
