What Constitutes Fresh?

Post by Rogermort » Fri May 27, 2016 2:06 pm

When buying liquid yeast, what sort of life should i be expecting on a phial? White labs as an example, should I be expecting two months to the use by date, three months? Four?

They are 'fresh' when they come off the production line. What then happens during transport and storage is unpredictable. As long as you make a starter, any in-date pack should be fine. Out of date up to at least 6 months, I'd build up a starter from something like 500ml @ 1.020 first. The older the pack, the lower the cell viability. Personally, I'd ignore any marketing claims.

When they are produced the vials have 4 months and the PurePitch have 6 months. That should let you know how long your supplier has had it in the (hopefully) fridge.

Great answer! I'll try to order just before I need them then.

Do WL guarantee that 6 months claim, in terms of pitching without making a starter? Trading Standards might get busy

Rob states the best before date on his website so you know how fresh the vial is when you order.

I love this and is the reason I usually order liquid yeasts from him.
